It felt like a routine self-care appointment, like a haircut or a manicure. But the reason for my visit was not for my appearance, but for my health. "I'm not sick, but I'm not well!"-- as the beloved 90's song Flagpole Sitta once shouted.
Winter had me feeling run down, cloudy, sluggish and generally depressed. My appetite was off and my hormones were out of control. I decided to try IV Nutrition & Hydration Therapy for the first time with a local spa, BFLO Hydration, to see if it could give me the boost I needed to get out of this seasonal slump.
What were the environment and the actual IV therapy like?

The community room where the IV therapy is administered was like a cozy living room. Ambient TV played in the background. A convenient and homey coffee and tea station set up to enjoy.
Darlene Chichester, registered nurse, director of patient care services, first sat down with me to discuss my current feels and see which aspects of my health I wanted to focus most on-- my mood, fatigue, and mental fog. We decided on one of their most popular IV Cocktails, the Cheeri-O!
The IV itself wasn't painful. "Just a little pinch and a bit of pressure," as they say. You forget it's there once you settle in. I'm always cold, but the IV made it worse, so I would recommend bringing a blanket from home. Also bring some headphones, and whatever else you want to enjoy while you relax. The session takes about an hour.
I only noticed 2 weird things: the smell of the fluid is a bit strange, and because my body is NEVER used to having an adequate amount of hydration, and in such a short amount of time, I felt a little poofy towards the end and for a few hours after, like Violet in Willy Wonka.
VITAMINS, NUTRITION & HYDRATION ALL IN ONE IV COCKTAIL. BUT HOW DOES IT WORK IN THE BODY?
“IV therapy delivers 100% absorption of vitamins, nutrients, antioxidants and electrolytes into the bloodstream for immediate use throughout your body.” -- Amanda Hicks, Co-owner of BFLO Hydration
“Current statistics show that more than 90% of Americans suffer from some type of vitamin deficiency and 75% of Americans are dehydrated. As we age, our bodies inevitably undergo wear and tear. These changes include the buildup of toxins and free radicals within our cells and can directly impact our ability to fight chronic disease and autoimmune disorders. Our digestive health may also suffer and our energy levels can sink," Hicks said.
"By bypassing the Gastrointestinal system, our vitamins and supplements are introduced into the bloodstream for immediate use and 100% absorption. What this means, is that the body doesn’t have to do any work to be able to utilize them. We see dramatic results with even fluids alone." -- Hicks
Each cocktail is tailored to treat the body’s specific needs and includes a mix of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Some nutrition and hydration IVs focus on athletic performance and recovery. Others on headache and migraine treatment or stress and anxiety.

Most of BFLO Hydration's IV cocktails are aptly named to serve a Buffalo proud population: The Queen City, Chippewa Undone (for hangovers), The Youngman, Sca-Jack-Me-Up, Let it Go, The Myer’s, Cheeri-o, and Thunder of Niagara.
Intramuscular Vitamin injections, Q-Boost Vitamin Sprays, Hydra-facials & Infrared Sauna

FLO Hydration also does intramuscular injections with a variety of choices to meet different needs, like antioxidants with anti-aging properties, or immunity boost. These injections provide a week’s worth of vitamins with only one injection.
I tried a B12 injection after my IV therapy. The shot was painless and had no side effects. B12 injections have been shown to have immediate health benefits including increased energy and concentration, improved metabolism, stronger immunity, improved sleep and can also help with hair loss.
BFLO Hydration also offers an infrared sauna, Hydro-facials and “Q-Boost Sprays,” vitamin sprays that can increase antioxidants and boost vitamin intake.
Did it work?
After my treatment, the sluggish and cloudy feelings I carried walking in the morning of my appointment did progressively improve throughout the day. I could feel the effects right away and they carried into the following days. My mind felt sharper and more motivated, even with the lack of sunlight in winter. My body felt more energized and notably stronger.
It was a helpful little boost to start me back toward my own wellness goals. IV vitamin and hydration therapy is a helpful and motivational option with no side effects to help you take more proactive control of your own health.
